The 551 Inductor EQ Plug-in is a faithful recreation of the acclaimed 551 500-series hardware released by Rupert Neve Designs in 2014. Featuring 3 bands of EQ inspired by Mr. Neve’s most prized vintage designs, the 551 can deliver thick & powerful lows, musical mids and sweet highs to any source. The 551 plug-in achieves this familiar, colorful sound by meticulously modeling the custom-wound inductors, transformers and class-A gain blocks found in the hardware. The plug-in also includes several new features, including true M/S processing and input/output metering.

  • 3-band EQ inspired by RND's favorite elements of Rupert’s vintage EQ designs
  • Low frequency band produces a creamy, resonant bass response similar to a vintage 1064, but with the flexibility of Shelf or Peak operation
  • Midrange band is inspired by a classic 1073, ideal for sweetening vocals and instruments while bringing them forward in a mix
  • High frequency band is modeled after a hybrid vintage / modern design, which blends inductor circuitry with capacitor-based topologies to achieve vintage tones with enhanced control
  • The High Pass filter is a 12dB/octave design with a fixed 80Hz frequency, and can be used in tandem with the low frequency EQ to add low-end presence without clouding the source material

Originally developed for the flagship Shelford Channel, the 551 EQ is full of rich, classic analog tone born from its custom-wound inductors and transformers – a hallmark of Rupert Neve's designs throughout his life. For the 551 Inductor EQ plug-in, all this analog thickness was carefully modeled to provide the legendary "Rupert Neve sound" that brings punch, polish, and vitality to any source.

Classic Tone, Greater Flexibility

Neither a copy nor a clone, the 551 takes inspiration from many of Rupert's classic designs and adds modern flexibility. The low and high frequency bands can operate as either shelf or peak filters for greater control than vintage modules, the 1073-inspired mid band adds a HI Q switch to narrow the proportional Q, and the plug-in adds true M/S processing, an output control, and input/output metering.

FAQ & MANUAL

  • What is an ‘Inductor’ EQ?
    Inductors are wires wound around a coil, and are physically similar to transformers. However, inductors provide a form of frequency-dependent resistance. Most importantly, they saturate in a beautiful, musical way that ended up being a large part of the ‘sound’ of Rupert’s classic EQ modules found in the 1073, 1081 and 1064, to name a few. We used inductors in our 551 hardware design and the plug-in meticulously models these inductors and how they harmonically interact with each EQ setting.
  • Is the 551 EQ plug-in modeled after the same EQ found in the Shelford Channel?
    Yes, the 551 hardware EQ, which is a 500 series module, was designed to be nearly identical to the inductor EQ section found on the Shelford Channel and in the penthouse modules of our large-format 5088 Console. The plug-in was painstakingly modeled to match the 551 HW sound and behavior as closely as possible.
  • How does M/S Mode work on the 551 plug-in?
    In M/S mode, CH A becomes the mid channel and CH B becomes the side channel. This allows you to EQ each channel independently, which can be helpful when dialing in M/S processing on a stereo bus or the master bus. Please also note that the CH A & CH B output trims give you flexible control over the mid/side level ratio.
  • How does the LINK button work on the 551 plug-in?
    On the 2-CH instance of the 551 plug-in, engaging the LINK button ‘links’ all the EQ controls to each other. This can be used in DUAL MONO, STEREO or M/S processing modes. Please make sure to engage link first if you want the controls to stay matched as you adjust one channel.
  • What do the HF PEAK and LF PEAK buttons do?
    Each of the these buttons changes the HF or the LF band from being a Shelf EQ to a peak/parametric EQ. The Q is at a fixed, fairly wide and musical setting when either the HF/LF PEAK buttons are engaged.
